When you picture a pallet rack, you are more than likely picturing a teardrop pallet rack. Made from roll-formed steel, this is the most common pallet rack design in the world. Its defining feature is the holes in the upright frames that support the rack’s horizontal beams. These holes are shaped like upside-down teardrops.
This design is extremely effective at holding beams in place, but it allows for easy reconfiguring of the rack because you can lift the beams up and out of the teardrop-shaped punch hole.
Teardrop pallet racks and structural pallet racks are similar, but the key difference between the two is all about how the horizontal beams are fastened to the upright frames. With teardrop pallet racks, you secure the beams via the teardrop-shaped punch hole in the uprights. Structural pallet racks, on the other hand, hold beams in place via bolts.
While the bolts are harder to remove and make it more difficult to adjust the racking to accommodate different heights and sizes, they also provide a much higher load capacity. Teardrop racks can hold an enormous amount of weight, but structural pallet racking is best for ultra-heavy loads.
No! This is one of the key benefits of pre-owned teardrop pallet racking. You don’t have to worry too much about buying used racks from the same manufacturer because the teardrop beam support design is relatively standard across the industry. That means you can mix and match parts within your rack system in most cases.
